Dodo: wants to prove his talent is far from extinct

If you said the word Dodo to me a few weeks ago my first thoughts would be of the strange looking, extinct flightless bird. I certainly wouldn't have thought you'd be referring to an Inter target.

Despite my love for Serie A, I hadn't heard of the Brazilian Dodo before the Roma youngster became linked with Inter.  However, he is now Walter Mazzarri's second signing of the Summer, so it is only right we learn a little more about the 22 year old left back.

Dodo was born in the town of Campinas in Brazil on the 6th February 1992.  His real name is José Rodolfo Pires Ribeiro.  His footballing career started as part of the Brazilian side Corinthians youth team, where he played from 2007 - 2009.  His professional career began in 2009 when he made four appearances for the Corinthians first team and also played in Brazil's Under 17 team in the South American under 17's championship that his Brazil team won.  It was his exceptional performances in this competition that brought him to the attention of Manchester United's scouts, and the talented defender was soon linked with a move to the English giants in February 2010.
The move wasn't to be however, and the proposed transfer to Manchester became little more than a two week trail at Man Utd's training ground before agreeing a first refusal deal with Corinthians that would stand until he became 21.  United's decision not to buy him was allegedly because they felt they didn't need a player of his abilities and position, and the move never came about, despite the massive hype created by the English club.  In December 2010, as Inter we're winning their Club World Cup title,  Corinthians agreed a loan deal for the rest of the season for Dodo with the Brazilian side Esporte Clube Bahia.
During his time on loan he made 14 appearances and scored his only club goal of his career so far.  Following his loan spell, the highly rated defender made his move to Europe by joining AS Roma in the summer of 2012.  In his first season in Italy he made 11 appearances, but last season he became an integral part of the Roma team that managed to finish 2nd in the league with 20 appearances for the capital club.  His inclusion in the team was mainly thanks to Federico Balzaretti's absence through injury for a large proportion of the season.
Now this summer the former target of Manchester United (and allegedly Real Madrid) has joined the Nerazzurri in a two year loan deal that has cost Inter just €1.2 million, but the club has agreed to a compulsory buyout of  a further €7.8 million when Dodo has made his competitive debut for the Nerazzurri.  Like many fans I was struggling to work out the logic of this deal, after all he is almost certain to make an appearance in his first season, let alone in the two year loan, so why didn't Inter just buy him out right?
I believe this is purely down to the finances of the club, Inter and Erick Thohir aren't stupid, they will realise that if they can delay paying the majority of Dodo's transfer fee for a few months it will give them time to sell surplus players to generate funds and also leave a decent pot of money to fund other transfers during the summer which will require instant payment.  In short this may seem a bizarre thing to agree to, but in reality it makes perfect sense for the club financially.

So is Dodo worth the €9 million transfer fee?  From what I've read and seen so far during his time with Inter at Pinzolo I would say definitely. Dodo is a very strong wide defensive player who loves to tackle or intercept balls, he will get stuck into aerial battles (even though he is only five foot ten inches, he is very strong in the air),  and with a knack of being able to hold onto the ball when dribbling down the left wing he will be perfect for playing killer passes to either Hernanes or Mateo Kovacic in the centre of midfield. His skills on the ball are very impressive, as you can see in the video below, and I think he will fit perfectly into Walter Mazzarri's formations, especially if the Inter coach sticks to his promise of using a four man defence. In his recent presentation to the press at the Pinzolo training camp Dodo told journalists that his greatest attribute is his desire to attack when on the ball as well as defend when he isn't. This is exactly what we want to see from our wingbacks, continuing the tradition we have seen over the years with players from legendary players such as Giacinto Facchetti, Roberto Carlos and of course Maicon.  Can Dodo join this prestigious list of  impressive Nerazzurri wing backs? I am hopeful that with hard work and his passion to take Inter back to the Champions League, Dodo will finally live up to his huge potential in the black and blue of FC Internazionale. With acquisitions like Nemanja vidic and Dodo I am excited for Inter's upcoming season and optimistic about what they will be able to achieve.Do you think Dodo can live up to expectations? Will he become our Roberto Carlos? Let me know what you think in the comments box below, and if you liked this article please support Nerazzurri World and share it across you social networks.
Grazie mille è Forza Inter!
